Cisco wins contract for major Dubai smart city project
The Dubai Design District, a greenfield smart city project expected to launch as many as 130 smart initiatives over the course of its development awarded Council Lead Partner Cisco a contract to provide advisory and consultancy-led services, according to a Gulf Business report. Cisco will provide an ICT masterplan for the design district. Rabih Dabboussi, managing director, Cisco, UAE, told Gulf Business: "Together with an ecosystem of partners, we have created a powerful, integrated platform that incorporates top technology, applications and business models to improve the way communities and cities are designed, built and run – from lighting to waste management, from parking and traffic services to safety and security."

Saudi Telecom launches effort to nurture next-gen IT talent
Saudi Telecom Company (STC) and Comptel Corp. have launched a program to develop the next generation of IT talent in Saudi Arabia. The initiative is designed to not only educate young Saudi professionals on telecommunications networks and Comptel’s Intelligent Data & Service Orchestration technologies, but also enable them for future leadership positions within STC, a Council Associate Partner. "STC strives to consistently undertake projects that further education and professional development within our society, and that support our most important assets – our employees. Our new Young IT Talent initiative will allow us to achieve both of these objectives," said Abdullah Al Owini, General Manager, Customer Enablement Applications at STC.
Silver Spring Networks wins metering project in New Zealand
Council Associate Partner Silver Spring Networks was selected by Metrix, a leading metering service provider, to partner with it in delivering Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) services for Trustpower, an electricity generator and energy and telecommunications retailer serving over 225,000 customers across New Zealand. The deployment will leverage Silver Spring’s multi-application, standards-based IPv6 networking platform and deliver two-way communications.
Elster snags contract for big AMI intiative in Mexico
Elster's EnergyAxis® smart grid system has been selected to support one of the largest Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) projects ever deployed in Mexico and Latin America. Council Associate Partner Elster’s system was selected by a consortium chosen by Mexico’s federal electricity company, Comisión Federal de Electricidad de México (CFE). CFE generates, transmits, distributes and markets electric power for more than 38.4 million customers, representing over 100 million people. The consortium will deploy Elster EnergyAxis software and field network devices as well as its new mREX2 technology for non-technical loss prevention.
