Silver Spring Networks introduces Operations Optimizer
Silver Spring Networks, a Council Associate Partner, has introduced its Operations Optimizer, which analyzes data from over 30 million water, gas and electricity meters, in both AMI and legacy environments. The solution offers utilities a rich analytics library with four configurable out-of-the-box modules that identify and diagnose meter and delivery issues, analyze loads across the distribution system, uncover theft and non-technical losses, and enable a suite of customer programs.

Future of augmented reality
Civic Resource Group, a Council Associate Partner, drew the attention of market researcher Frost and Sullivan in a new report on the future of augmented reality. The company's technology provides contextual help and information on user's smartphones, reducing barriers for cities that want to use it to help people travel, shop and sightsee, among other applications. The report specifically called out an augmented reality app the company built for attendees at the Council's recent Smart Cities Week.

GE and Alstom Grid join forces
Council Lead Partners GE and Alstom Grid have combined in a merger that the companies say will result in more innovation in the renewable energy market. The companies have already been collaborating on the Deepwater Wind project near Rhode Island, the first offshore wind farm in America. The project, slated for completion next year, will have five giant wind turbines that are twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty. The Haliade turbines are built by Alstom and the magnetic generators are produced by GE.

Itron helps Grand Prairie upgrade water metering
Council Lead Partner Itron was chosen by Grand Prairie, Texas, for a project to upgrade the city's water metering infrastructure. The utility, which serves 180,000 customers, will use Itron's analytics software to improve customer service and improve operational analysis. Customers will gain online access to their accounts and consumption information, helping the city improve conservation efforts.

Apex CoVantage helps develop smart grid pilot project
Council Associate Partner Apex CoVantage is working with Tunisia’s Societe Tunisienne de l’Electricite et du Gaz on a project to eventually move the utility onto the smart grid. In the first phase of the project, the utility will use Apex's ProField technology to reduce its non-technical losses. Next, Apex will use rapid deployment systems to develop pilots and roadmaps for robust upgrades over the longer term.
