Siemens technology to run new fuel-efficient power plant
Council Associate Partner Siemens will supply all the major electrical equipment for a new fuel efficient power plant under construction in Michigan. Siemens is supplying critical low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment and power transformers for the new Holland Energy Park combined cycle power plant in Holland, Michigan. The new power plant, scheduled to open this fall, replaces an aging coal-fired plant. The plant will use waste heat from the circulating water system for use in an expanding downtown snowmelt system, alleviating the need to salt or plow roads during the winter months.

Bechtel helps bring light rail to Edmonton Valley
Council Lead Partner Bechtel is playing a key role in a new light rail project that will run through the downtown core of Edmonton, Alberta, one of Canada’s fastest growing cities. The line will eventually serve 100,000 daily commuters, stretching 27 km across the valley. Construction will start later this year on the first phase, which involves building about half of that. Bechtel is the lead partner for design and construction and helped secure funding for the project, which is being built through a public-private partnership model. Edmonton is Canada's second-fastest growing city and is expected to grow by 50% by 2040.

IBM’s Watson selected for Finnish IoT projects
Two new Internet of Things projects in Finland will use IBM’s Watson IoT cloud platform to derive advanced insights and predictive analytics. First, Fingrid, Finland’s main electricity transmission grid operator will use IBM Watson IoT technologies to help manage its 14,000 km electricity grid network. Fingrid used IBM's analytics to pull data generated by networks of sensors into a consolidated view of the entire electricity transmission grid. IBM is also working with Kone to remotely monitor and optimize the management of elevators, escalators, doors and turnstiles in buildings. Using IBM's Watson IoT cloud platform, it will analyze data from sensors to identify and predict issues, while automating the response to issues that arise in real-time.

GE unveils world’s largest LED retrofit project
Council Lead Partner GE is behind what it's calling the single-largest installation of LED lights. It's replacing all the lights at 5,000 Chase banking branches with energy-efficient LEDs. This LED retrofit will cut Chase's energy bill in half and deliver significant environmental benefits. GE says the energy savings is equivalent to taking nearly 27,000 passenger cars off the road or diverting nearly 50,000 tons of waste from landfills. The retrofit begins next month and will be finished by the end of next year.

Civic Resource Group secures major investor backing
Council Associate Partner Civic Resource Group has secured financial support and backing from a group of international investors led by Atlantic Bridge and Globalive Capital. In addition to raising approximately $3.5 million, CRG completed the acquisition of two startups — i3t out of Dublin, Ireland, and GXMG out of Toronto, Canada — which together provide key intellectual property and talent in mobility, big data and augmented reality.
