Scroll down for short takes from Council members…

Itron hits a 50 million milestone: Calling it an industry first, Council Lead Partner Itron has shipped its 50 millionth gas communication module in North America. CenterPoint Energy's natural gas distribution business received the module, which is an important part of the utility’s automated meter reading deployment. Itron’s advanced gas metering solution enables the Houston-based utility to remotely collect up to 10,000 meter readings per day per vehicle with mobile data collection.

Alstom Grid wins bid to connect Greek islands: The aim of the €35 million project is to sustainably meet energy demand on the Cycladic islands throughout high-demand summer seasons; to phase out dedicated fuel-powered generation plants on Cycladic islands in line with EU directives, such as reducing gas emissions; and finally, to lower the cost of energy in the Cycladic islands by connecting them to power plants on the mainland. Council Lead Partner Alstom Grid will supply four gas-insulated substations and includes design and manufacturing of Alstom equipment such as GIS, transformers, reactors and capacitors.

Report highlights promise of Camgian's Egburt: A new report out by CLSA Americas calls Camgian’s Egburt one of the promising newer offerings in the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) market. Titled Deep Field: Discovering the Internet of Things, the 144-page report chronicles IoT’s coming demand inflection point and identifies the leading companies and products that will be major players in the IoT landscape. "One of the most interesting entrants in the market comes from Camgian Microsystems, which is developing a purpose-built IoT edge device based on the proposition that existing IT products are not built for the IoT." Camgian is a Council Associate Partner.

Marietta PD wins SunGard Public Sector honors: At its recent Public Safety and Justice Conference in Greensboro, N.C., Council Associate Partner SunGard Public Sector awarded the Marietta, Georgia Police Department its Social Media Impact Award for its Police Cyber Unit. This unit leverages social media as an investigative resource to assist in active cases and gather intelligence from the community.  It is integrated with the Marietta Law Enforcement Image and Video Exchange (M-LIVE), which allows citizens to share information, pictures and videos about ongoing cases with the MPD. And SunGard says the system is paying off, citing a recent theft during a Craigslist transaction.

Utility Dive highlights Opower's focus on the utility of the future: Council Associate Partner Opower is recognized as a pioneer in behavior-based energy efficiency. A recent Utility Dive interview suggests that the company is shifting its attention to the utility of the future as rising expectations have more utilities focusing on customer relationships. Opower President and founder Alex Laskey told Utility Dive: "It’s a relatively new focus of theirs," he said. "As a consequence, there are tremendous holes in their IT infrastructure and in their business capacity to deliver what customers want." It's an interesting piece; you can read it here.
