PlayPump system earns Itron best Community Project at African Utility Week

Council Global Partner Itron won top honors for Community Project at the 14th annual African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa conference and expo. Itron built a water-delivery PlayPump system at the Relekile Primary School in Kuruman, South Africa. Kuruman is a very dry and arid area of the Kalahari Desert. The system, the second built by Itron in South Africa, is driven by a merry-go-ground. As the children play, the merry-go-round’s motion powers the pump, which draws clean water into a 2,500-litre storage tank for drinking, washing, cleaning and watering the school’s vegetable garden. With the new PlayPump, Relekile Primary School can extract up to 450 liters of water an hour. The PlayPump was built as part of a collaboration with Itron’s customer and local utility Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality. Itron will provide ongoing maintenance for the system, enabling the school to reallocate funds to student programs.

Camgian Microsystems brings edge computing to IoT with Egburt

Council Associate Partner Camgian Microsystems has announced it will bring edge computing to the Internet of Things (IoT) market through a new category of device called Egburt. Egburt, set for release this October, will offer enterprises a fundamentally new way to implement IoT solutions where all crucial data and real-time, actionable analytics remain local with higher-level information processing, visualization and distribution performed in a secure, cloud environment.

“Real-time, actionable information is going to be a crucial piece of IoT,” said Gary Butler, chairman and CEO of Camgian Microsystems. “Centralized computing architectures constructed using legacy IT products will not be able to support the timely analysis and reporting that will be required for IoT, especially as large numbers of devices continue to be added to the network.” Camgian says that Egburt’s flexible sensor interfaces, real-time processing and low-power design will create more efficient and secure ways to monitor, optimize and control business processes across a range of related IoT markets including smart cities, agriculture, infrastructure, manufacturing, facilities and retail.

Qualcomm introduces system-on-chip for neighborhood and SMB small cells

With the evolution to LTE networks and the growing use of bandwidth intensive applications, mobile data traffic is expected to increase exponentially. To help meet that demand, Council Global Partner Qualcomm has announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, is introducing the Qualcomm FSM90xx system-on-chip (SoC) for neighborhood and small and medium business (SMB) small cells. With access points based on this new small cell SoC, the company says mobile operators, cable multiple systems operators (MSOs) and businesses can expand network capacity and ensure superior end-user mobile experiences cost effectively. In making the announcement, Qualcomm explains it has been working to deliver small cell technology that helps operators, OEMs and ecosystem companies find new ways to add network capacity and meet the demand for increasingly higher quantity and quality content from mobile devices inside homes, across neighborhoods and in small and medium businesses.

EDF showcases its new platform for sustainable urban development

Council Global Partner EDF has unveiled its urban system modeling platform for sustainable urban development at the World Cities Summit in Singapore. In addition, EDF announced it’s creating the EDF Asian Sustainable Cities Center of Excellence with the purpose of accelerating innovation and to strengthen ties with Singapore. Devoted to urban planning, the research center aims at developing and implementing new collaborations with Singapore as well as other cities in the region. These announcements follow the cooperation agreement signed last year with the Singapore’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) to develop a ground-breaking urban modeling IT tool. HBD is Singapore’s main urban housing builder. EDF says its urban modeling tool can be used starting at the conception phase of planning. The tool takes into account energy and environmental dimensions, as well as greenery, water, waste and transport in the urban space.

Neptune Technology Group adds companies to Connected Utility Partnership Program

Neptune Technology Group, a provider of meter reading and metering technologies, has announced that three companies -- Clevest, iWater Inc., and Continental Utility Solutions Inc. -- have joined its Connected Utility Partnership Program, a project created to meet the growing needs of water utilities by extending Neptune's capabilities beyond meter reading. Neptune says the partnership program, with its innovative technology providers, creates value for water utilities through an Advanced Sensor Infrastructure (ASI) that provides shared, analyzed data across an array of utility applications. The goals of the program are to communicate field data across departments and leverage utility personnel knowledge to create a smart water utility. It also works to ensure simple, out-of-the-box connectivity to Neptune AMR and AMI solutions without the need for custom interfaces.
