Qualcomm launches mHealth center in Beijing
Qualcomm Wireless Reach and The George Institute for Global Health are collaborating on the creation of the China Center for mHealth Innovation (CCmHI). Its goal is to change the landscape of mobile health in China. The Qualcomm Wireless Reach initiative brings advanced wireless technologies to underserved communities globally, improving lives with projects that strengthen economic and social development. Hosted by The George Institute for Global Health at Peking University Health Science Center, the CCmHI will see medical and engineering researchers working side-by-side and in collaboration with representatives from government, academia and the private sector to develop advanced wireless solutions targeting the 10 leading causes of premature death and disability in China. Qualcomm is a Council Lead Partner.
Ooredoo wins cloud deal with Al Jazeera network
Qatar's leading communications company Ooredoo will implement a media cloud infrastructure to connect the Al Jazeera Media Network's main hubs in Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Africa as well as its news bureaus around the globe. The goal is to improve Al Jazeera's news sharing capabilities. "In winning this bid against some of the world’s largest technology companies, we are showing that Ooredoo is a world-class provider of cutting-edge business solutions," said Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, chairman of Ooredoo, a Council Lead Partner.
Enel's sustainability efforts feted
The Enel Group has been admitted to the prestigious CDP Italy Climate Disclosure Leadership Index 2014, published in the CDP Italy 100 Climate Report 2014. Enel, a Council Lead Partner, was ranked in the index as a leading company in terms of quality, comprehensiveness and transparency of climate change data it made available to the market through CDP, the international NGO promoting sustainable economies. Within the index, Enel was awarded a score of 98/100. The pioneering Italian utility has also been admitted for the first time to the STOXX Global ESG Leaders index, a benchmark designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.
Gartner calls GE's GIS for utilities a leader
GE’s Digital Energy business has been named one of the industry’s leading solutions providers of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for utilities. This was announced in a recent report issued by Gartner where it analyzed the capabilities of several of GE’s competitors that offer similar systems. "We believe the acknowledgement validates our R&D strategy and reinforces our commitment to help our customers manage their transmission and distribution systems with leading edge technology,” said Bryan Friehauf, product line leader—software solutions for GE Digital Energy, a Council Lead Partner.
Cisco, Toshiba collaborating on smart communities
Council Lead Partner Cisco and Toshiba will work together on new ways to utilize the Internet of Everything to improve processes, productivity and experiences in manufacturing, transportation and city environments. This global collaboration brings together the Cisco Fog Computing*2 network environment featuring Cisco’s network-wide security solution with the Toshiba Group’s endpoint management technology. Toshiba wants to generate new value by connecting its energy, healthcare, storage products and services using cloud computing, big data and analytics technologies, to achieve its vision of creating a safe, secure and comfortable society, the "Human Smart Community." Toshiba intends to apply the technologies to a wider range of devices and spread it to manufacturing systems, traffic/transportation systems, and smart cities.

Enevo wins deal to deploy solution in Vilafranca, Spain: Vilafranca will be the first municipality in Spain to use the Enevo ONe solution that optimizes waste collection by analyzing fill-level and operations data from its network of small wireless sensors in waste containers and recycling sites. In other news, Council Associate Partner Enevo received the Best IoT / Industrial Internet service award for 2014 from the Finnish Technology Industry. The judges were impressed with how Enevo’s remote-monitoring of waste containers, saves time, money and the environment.
Siemens wind energy will power Ontario homes: Council Associate Partner Siemens' Wind Power and Renewables Division has received two new orders for onshore wind projects in Ontario, Canada. The contracts include the supply, installation and commissioning of a total of 137 wind turbines rated at 2.3 megawatts. Together both wind power projects will generate clean power for more than 100,000 Ontario homes.
CH2M HILL wins London flood defense work: The Environment Agency awarded Council Associate Partner CH2M HILL the contract for the Thames Estuary Asset Management Program. The major tidal flood defense program, valued at £300 million, represents the first 10 years of a 100 year program developed by the Environment Agency to protect London and the Thames estuary from current and future tidal flooding through to 2100.
Space-Time Insight solution wins award for Hydro One: Hydro One took the Utility Analytics Institute's 2014 Innovation Award for its asset analytics application. Hydro One is the largest electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) company in Ontario, Canada. Its implementation of Space-Time Insight's Asset Intelligence solution includes the visualization and analysis of 4.5 million T&D assets, helping Hydro One reduce the risk of asset failure and lower the cost of managing its asset fleet. "The software has delivered measurable results for our business and that is the true test of any innovation," said Bruno Jesus of Hydro One. Space-Time Insight is a Council Associate Partner.
Black & Veatch tapped for Ohio plant: Council Associate Partner Black & Veatch will serve as prime contractor for the engineering, procurement, construction and startup of the Oregon Clean Energy Center (OCEC) in Oregon, Ohio. The 869 megawatt natural gas combined cycle power plant will provide electricity for growing manufacturing and residential use, replacing generation from several aging coal-fired power plants in the region that are being retired. “We selected Black & Veatch because of their world class engineering skill, their strong track record in delivering major power generation projects around the world and in the U.S., and because of their depth of awareness of the new technology we planned to employ,” said William J. Martin, Managing Partner of North America Project Development, which is developing the plant. The facility includes two Siemens H class combustion turbines.
