Bad traffic? There are apps for that

With hundreds of apps created by and for cities, our Smart Cities Apps Gallery is the place to go if you're looking for ideas for smartphone apps that will delight folks in your city. For example, here are a couple stress-reducing traffic apps we think are pretty cool:

The "I'm late for work and I need to get there fast app."  Developed for the Kansas City, Missouri metro area, KC Traffic Scout provides current traffic conditions on area freeways and major surface streets, including accidents, road construction and special events. It also includes a zoomable, scrollable map-based display. Developed by TransCore, the app pulls information from the Kansas City Scout's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

The "my kid's not home from school yet, where's his bus app?" A location information app, Where's My School Bus? helps parents in Boston track their child's bus in real time -- for instance, during a snow storm when road conditions create delays. Developed by Code for America fellows for the city of Boston, the app is available to parents through the Boston Public Schools.

The Smart Cities Apps Gallery features many other transportation-related apps from around the world, plus apps for citizen reporting, public safety, economic development and a number of other categories.

If you aren't a member of the Smart Cities Council yet, the Apps Gallery is another reason to join (and it's free). If you are a member and logged in, click here to visit the gallery.
